The Vallombrosa Silvomuseum: an open-air museum among forest, history and paths

In the heart of the Vallombrosa Forest there is a unique place where nature, research, spirituality and culture have been intertwined for centuries: it is the Silvomuseo di Vallombrosa, a true open-air museum dedicated to the forest and landscape heritage of one of the symbolic places of the Reggio Emilia area.

The Silvomuseo was created with the aim of telling the story of the forest and silvicultural practices developed over time by Vallombrosian monks, who shaped the landscape here with an innovative and deeply respectful approach to the environment. Walking in the Silvomuseum means walking through monumental forests, historic fir forests, nature trails and places that hold centuries of forest knowledge.

The project enhances Vallombrosa as a natural laboratory of biodiversity, environmental education and sustainable tourism, offering accessible trails for hikers, families, scholars and outdoor enthusiasts.

The Paths of the Silvomuseum

Among the most fascinating aspects of the project are the Silvomuseum Walks, routes immersed in the forest that allow people to experience the area in a slow and conscious way.

The walks lead through paths among fir and beech trees, along routes that tell the story of the relationship between man and forest, between spirituality and landscape management. These are not just treks, but narrative and cultural experiences: along the way it is possible to encounter scenic viewpoints, historical evidence, elements related to biodiversity, and symbolic places of Vallombrosian tradition.

The trails are designed to enhance the natural heritage of the area and promote sustainable enjoyment of the forest, becoming an invitation to slow down and carefully observe the surrounding landscape.

The Silvomuseo also connects to the forest’s hiking trails, the Vallombrosa Trail Area dedicated to bicycle tourism and the recovery of the old Sant’Ellero-Saltino railroad track, helping to create an integrated network of soft mobility and nature tourism.
